Every client asks some version of the same question in the first call: "Do we need SEO or GEO?" It's the wrong question. They're not competing budgets — they're three outputs of the same underlying work, aimed at three different places a buyer might find you.
Three Terms, One Foundation
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) gets your site ranking in Google's traditional blue links — the results page people have used for 20 years. It's driven by backlinks, keyword relevance, page speed, and crawlability.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) gets your content pulled into Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets — the summary box that now sits above the blue links for most searches. It rewards content structured as direct, self-contained answers, backed by schema markup.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets your brand cited by name inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity responses — surfaces with no "page one" at all, just a generated answer that either mentions you or doesn't. It rewards clear entity signals (who you are, what you do, who vouches for you) over keyword density.
The reason this isn't three separate projects: all three reward the same underlying things — clean technical structure, schema that tells machines what your content is, and answers written to actually resolve the reader's question instead of circling it for 400 words before getting to the point.
When Each One Matters Most
SEO still carries the highest search volume today — most B2B buyers still start with a Google search, and ranking there remains the largest single traffic source for most sites we build. If you have zero organic visibility, SEO fundamentals come first, because there's no AI citation to win if AI engines can't find your content either.
AEO matters once you're already ranking, because it's the difference between a buyer clicking through to your site versus getting their answer directly in Google's summary box and never visiting at all. Structuring existing content into direct-answer blocks — a clear question as a heading, a self-contained answer underneath — is usually a content-editing task, not a rebuild.
GEO matters most for buyers already in the "which vendor should I even consider" stage, before they've typed a single Google search — because increasingly, that stage now runs through a chat interface instead. It's the newest of the three, the least contested by competitors, and currently offers the best return per hour invested for exactly that reason.
What Actually Changes Between Them
- SEO priority: backlinks, keyword-to-page mapping, site speed, mobile usability, internal linking.
- AEO priority: FAQ schema, direct-answer paragraph structure, clear H2s phrased as the actual question a buyer would ask.
- GEO priority: entity markup (Organization, sameAs links to real social/business profiles), an llms.txt file, and passage-level answers an AI model can quote verbatim without editing.
Notice none of these are mutually exclusive. A well-structured FAQ answer that helps AEO is the same answer an LLM will quote for GEO. Schema markup that helps Google understand your Service page is the same schema an AI model uses to resolve who you are. Building for one without the others is leaving the other two on the table for free.
Real Example: Ultra Power Controls
We didn't run separate SEO, AEO, and GEO projects for Ultra Power Controls — we built one technical foundation (schema, Core Web Vitals, an llms.txt file, FAQ-structured content) and got all three outcomes from it: 42 keywords ranking top-10 in Google (SEO), FAQ content eligible for AI Overviews (AEO), and citations in 22% of Claude responses and ~18% of ChatGPT responses for electrical panel manufacturing queries (GEO) — all from the same 6-month build.
The Bottom Line
Don't ask "SEO or GEO." Ask "is our technical foundation — schema, structure, direct answers — solid enough to win all three at once." For almost every company we've audited, the honest answer is no, and the fix is the same regardless of which surface you care about most.
